Character set for translation to other languages

    Hi.

In order to increase the exposure of RS, I thought of translating the first tutorial missions to Spanish and maybe continue if there is enough interest by the community.
But maybe there is some uncompatibility with the character set.

When I type the following: "Introducción", in game I get a strange character instead of the "ón". I am not so sure how to find out or how to investigate. It is a bit annoying for a translation.

Do you have any advice for me?

    Thank you.
Edit: managed to take screenshot. Not only it substitutes with wrong characters, but even eats half of some words.

This is probably a compatibility issue with the Noesis UI font I'm using. Let me try to get with the people over at Noesis and see what they recommend.

    Thanks for your efforts!

    I could do/help with a german translation, so maybe you can also look/ask for "ä", "ö", "ü" and "ß".

BTW, Sergio, could the problem also be that you put in latin-1 but it should be unicode (UTF-8 maybe)?

This could very well be an issue, yes

I took one of the mission files: T1_FF_INTRO.ROG and translated the event messages.
I have just checked the file, but there is no 'latin-1' or 'utf' in it. Unfortunately, because that could have been a solution if the character set can be defined within the file, but seems not to be the case.
Maybe that is defined in any other file in the hierarchy? I don't know how the thing is structured, but this could result in an interesting point.

Well, the encoding could just be implicitly fixed to UTF-8. What I meant was that your editor put in latin-1 characters but the engine tries to interpret the file as UTF-8 encoded.

I had a quick go at it and renamed the first tutorial to "Einführung", manually told my editor to save the file in UTF-8 and it worked.

I use notepad++ as my text editor of choice, it has an encoding menu. In this case I would suggest using "UTF-8 without BOM".

Michael, I think the file is detected as ANSI by most editors because it contains only ASCII (7-bit) characters. Maybe you could put in a UTF-8 BOM to make it detectable?

I check yesterday and Notepad++ detect it as UTF-8 without BOM.

Ah, can't wait to get home today and test it!
The fact that you renamed yours with an umlaut, and it worked, is certainly relieving.

    Thank you!
